Hi Rosanna,
I remember you and your brother Roy, I also remember a family called Wilson who lived in Doddington St, Nancy's corner shop, the dead railway, the King's picture house and the best bonfire on West Craven St. I left Joey's in 1970/71 and went to Sacred Heart until '76.

Thank you to Jean Butler and John Hollard for getting back to me about the Azzopardi family . Raymond's dad was called Charlie not sure of his mum's name but he had a brother called Vincent, a sister called Teresa not sure of the youngest one . While I've been busy on my side, my wife Ros was asking about her old friends who she lost touch with . They all lived in Salford either in Ordsall or near the precinct. I will give you their names maybe one of you may know them .It would be a nice surprise for her if you did .We used to go drinking in the Welcome pub in Ordsall lane. Her friends were Carol Blake who had brothers Eddy and Steve .Jean Worthington, Anne Hindle, also Anne Prior- I think her sister was Jean. I am doing this in secret to give Ros a surprise if I found them. Many thanks for getting back to me so far, Tommy.

Hi I'm wondering if this is where I went to school in the 60's...I lived at 4 Zacharia street (excuse spelling) and walked to school crossing a busy road where there was a wonderful lolly pop lady (I think Osborne pub was around the crossing?) A police station was to my right and the school was at the end of a long street called Tatton St? A Fr. Dolan was there at the time I seem to remember?

Further to my posting of yesterday. I scanned through
previous messagesand one or two pertinent points gave rise to this addition.
1. A reference to Doddington Street. My late wife
Elise Waddington, lived at No. 37, until we married in 1954. Her younger siblings, Valerie and William, moved away a few years later. When at Joey's, I lived on West Craven Street. After the Wedding ( at St. J's ) Elise and I
set up home on Eldon Street. (off Tatton St,.at the Oldfield Rd. end ) One or two moves later we finally
"came home" to Scotland . Alas, my Dear Elise passed
away just after our fifty-fourth Anniversary See Ya. !

Just read the entry from (?) Georgie, dated 07/02/12.in
which he listed a few names. The only name I wasn't familiar with was " cammileri, which I have most probably mis-spelled. Not really surprising as it has been a long time since I used it on a regular basis. My friends were brothers, Charlie and Harry, both of Tatton Street at the
Goodiers Lane end. Last heard of them having moved to the Blackpool area yonx back. I and my own brothers, Anthony and Joseph, were evacuated to Lancaster in '39
/ '40 where we lived just a short walk apart. We all came back home in '43 /'44, as did Charlie and Harry.
I do wonder if, by some chance, taking into account the
passage of time, there could be still some old Pals ( of
the mid-forties to the early fifties) still attached to this mortal coil. Gosh, I do hope so !

Addition to my last comment. Alas, both my younger Brothers, Anthony and Joseph, have both , alas, passed
away. Tony,as he was known to his friends, was in the 'Infant's" 1935/1937. His Teacher was,at the time a
delightful Lady by the name of Mrs Wilkes. in that period
there was a class photograph. Tony was in it. Is there the
slightest possible chance of a Family member having a copy ? (Fingers Crossed, up here, in Scotland.)

Prior to 1939, (Evacuated/Lancaster) I and my brothers,
(Anthony and Joseph), rejoined our classes and our
classmates in 1944. At present, I am living in Scotland,
and have done so, with my late wife Elise (waddington),
who regrettably died 3 yrs. ago. If there is anyone 'out there' who is of a similar age and was attending between
1937 and 1945 ? I'm looking for GERALD TAYLOR...
d.o.b. Feb. 20th. Would like to hear from any member
of that class also, altho' I could be asking too much ?

Hi Eileen - Thought you had disappeared. Not seen you on here for sometime. I didn't know Vinny was killed- how awful . Chris was over a few years ago . I am friends with Travis Rowlands ( Catherine Higgins' Son) on Face Book . He told me Chris had been over but not heard from him since.. Me and Maria were great friends of Anne's too and Kathleen Mealey .. not heard of Kathleen since I saw her and Maureen some years ago at a Reunion.. I heard Maureen had passed away.. Maria sends her regards - she doesn't have a computer. I speak to her on the phone .. You will remember the Higgins family - they lived opposite Kathleen .. I will ask Travis if he heard anything of the Kitt's. He seems to be in touch with a lot of people from round the area and indeed St Joseph's. Did you know Roy Zammit and Michael Gerrihty from St Joseph's? They were Altar boys when we were sort of ready for leaving school. I am friends with them on face book too.. quite a lot of people from St Joseph's and round the area on there .. Speak soon, Eileen - take care x

I remember it well plus in the summer play of Junior 4 I had to have a moustache and that also lasted a few days. I remember I was playing a man who found tomorrow's paper and started to make money on the stock market and horses. In the last scene I was reading the obituaries and mine was there and I fell dead on the stage (Oscar worthy) this was my last acting experience. I think my wife was to be played by Linda O Bryan but she became ill and was replaced by Corrine Tennant. I was altar boy at Joey's for about five years until the second year at Sacred Heart and I recall serving when the United goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer was married. Do you remember when we used to receive tickets for the reserve games at OT? Father Dolan's cousin was the reserve keeper behind Stepney Pat Dunne. During this year there is a function for Father Dolan to celebrate 50 years as a priest at Swinton Park Golf Club and it is being organised by an ex teacher from Sacred Heart/Joey's - Miss Rabbitt.

Has anyone any information on the following pupils, as I'm constructing a family tree. These pupils lived in Ordsall:
Annie Hyde born 1909
Albert Edward Hyde born 14.07.1910
Lily Hyde born 1912
Harry Hyde born 06.09.1914

Unfortunately Annie Hyde died in 1918 aged 9yrs, cannot find out where she is interned. Also, another Albert Edward Hyde born 1903, Lily Hyde born 1906, unfortunatly Lily Hyde died in 1918 aged 12yrs. There is also Elsie Downie my mother dob 26.06.1911. It is possible that the above persons went to Mount Carmel School if there was a school there at the time. Any information would be most appreciated.

I do not know if you can recall but in either Junior 3 or Junior 4 we played a football game against St Boniface's at Littleton Road and won 19-0. It would be good if there was still a record of this. The game would have been in either 1967/68 or 68/69. Thinking back, I believe 67/68 would be favourite. Does anybody recall this game?

I am sure you must have gone to the Kings picture house which was at the top of Doddington Street particularly on a Saturday morning.

So far, no comment from any source re whereabouts
Gerard Taylor. Quite possible too many years have passed. Not much possibility, alas, of family and /or descendants seeing, or aware of, this guestbook.
However, are the Camerllairi's of Tatton Street,
the Vitti sisters, late of Goodiers Lane, and any others, Pete Varreto, Lol Moran, Kevin Seddon,
Jimmy and Peter Duffy, (not related) or Josie Cauchi
traceable through this medium?

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the recent 50s & 60s reunion at the Kersal Club. As in the past it was a great success with about 180 guests turning up. For a few of us it was extra special to see one our old teachers Mr Paul Richardson, who left St Joseph's when the senior school closed in December 1964. He informed me he had a brilliant time at the school from 1960 to 64. I'd also like to the school for allowing me to mention our reunion over the last few months and all the people who helped to sell ticket's.

I was born and lived on Pritchard St and went to St Joseph's for a very short time when I was about 3/4yrs old. My family moved out 1970/71 before Joe the bulldozer driver demolished the street. The old headteacher Mr McGraph (Pop) was my wife's grandfather. He played the organ at my parents' wedding in St Joseph's Church.

I attended St Joseph's from l950 to 1957 when I went to Adelphi. I loved my primary school so much it inspired me to be a teacher. I have fond memories of Sr Rose, Mother Elizabeth , Miss Baxendale and Mrs Bentham. I also remember how kind and caring they all were.

Thank you for your message. It's good to hear from another past pupil who remembers affectionately the dedicated work carried out by earlier generations of Sisters ( and priests) and teachers here at St. Joseph's. A case of 'the good that men do' living on!

Hello All, Just wanted to say how wonderful this school really is, my daughter Julia has arrived late in the school year was accepted with open arms and I believe has made a contribution to many things, including Tudor Dancing and Joseph, diverse and yet, fantastic. I would also like to thank her wonderful teacher and support staff, I won't mention names, don't want to embarrass anyone. Julia loves the school and that makes us very happy and proud of our school. THANK YOU ALL.

How kind of you to take the time to post your message. Julia has enthusiastically joined in everything that's going on! We are so pleased that she feels so at home already - and that, already, you feel able to write 'our' school - because this small Catholic school really does belong to its family of children, parents and staff. Here's to a happy and successful new year.

Just had word about the re-union and am very interested. I was at "Joeys" in the 50s (dates a little sketchy now) but my brother Phil was there too. Some names I remember apart from Mr McGrath, and Mr Mulholland - Father Dolan for sure, he performed my marriage ceremony. I remember Father Yarnitzky too.
Harry Caruana, Mike Appleyard, the McManus brothers, Mike Gabrielides RIP - Bobby Hopton - my now brother in law - Lawrence Aimson - had a bit of a battle with Bobby on the soccer field. Would be happy for contact with anyone of the same era, who can pass on any other names and contacts. Great School !!!!!!!

I went to St Joseph's infant and junior school from 1963 to 1970, when I first went Mother Amarbilis (think that's how it was spelt) was headteacher in the infants and Mr McGrath headteacher in the juniors. Mr & Mrs Mulholland were teachers then too along with Mrs Bramwell who was really strict but probably my most influential teacher of all time. Happy days at this school, those were the days. I still have some class photos too as well as my 1st Communion photo.
*********
('Amabilis' - latin name of a fifth Century priest who was canonised; Religious Sisters take the name of a saint when they enter the Order. It means 'loving or lovable' - Editor) We would love to add any new photos to the Archives page-especially First Communion pictures. We are trying to complete the set of pictures for every year since the War - and then hopefully earlier than that - for both Mount Carmel and St. Joseph's.

I have just popped down to Manchester from Aberdeen where I now work, and I was wondering if anybody knows if there is a reunion planned to celebrate Fr Dolans 50th anniversary. Hi I attended Joey's from 52 to 62. I'm on the 61 football photo. We beat St Lawrence's in the final 3-1 and I got the three. I'm second left front row.I remember Mr Richardson very well and would love to hear from him.He had a very unique way of football training - we would line up in the school yard and he would give us fifteen yards start to the end,he carried the cane and if he caught you,you got a whack on the backside (he only caught the smokers) I must recommend that to Fergie.Again, i would love to hear from anyone from Joey's,I now live in Goa,India, regards to all, a great school.

Regarding letter from Helen Richardson about her dad. He was my last teacher before leaving at Christmas 1964 to go to the brand new Sacred Heart school. I believe he emigrated to South Africa shortly afterwards. He was a great teacher, down to earth, bit of a teddy boy and quite an accomplished footballer. In fact I think he turned down Man Utd to go into teaching. Great to hear he's still around and I hope he's keeping well.

Hello to All, I have very fond memories of St. Joseph's, lived in the corner shop on the corner of Hyde Street, attended the school from 1960 -67. Remember Mother Armablis (not sure about the spelling) and Father Yanitskiy, who could forget Father Dolan and the Sunday night school discos (even though I was too young) they all came into our shop afterwards, where I used to help serve. Does anyone remember the elecution lessons? Was it Mrs. Jacks, and the fold up sleeping beds in the nursery class, gosh it is all coming back ..............

Hello ,
Thankyou so much for the good luck and it looks like it came to my work-I made a stunning dress, which I am very pleased of. I have learnt a lot of new skills and if the examiners pass me for my work it will cover half of my art GCSE. Unfortunately my dress was white with black flowers on and someone put purple felt tip on it but I rescued it and to be honest I think it looks beautiful. I have got to talk to the examiners in September from the art awards, I am very nervous.

And thanks so much and I will come and visit you as soon as I can.
Bye for now

Hiya all!!!

Its Sean McCann, I just wanted to say how I miss my old primary school, it was great :D

Thanks to all the teachers for making my primary years so great...I have loads of fond memories with this school.....can remember organising the tennis tournament that Liam Houghton won, can remember my first main play part as the pharaoh's dancer with Matty Davies and Leo Freeman and can remember the big performance a lot of us did in the Bridgewater Hall performing Brunibar to around 10,000 people, it was well mint!!!

I've just finished my high school now, and I think how it's gone so quick, it's mad but great and I can't wait for the things I can now do!!!

I can remember a leavers note I think I got from Sister Jenny, it said "Hope to see your name in lights soon", I'll do my best to make that come true anyway I can, hopefully acting!!!

Thanks St Josephs!!!

Hello,
I would just like to say that I still miss St. Joey's so much. But I have finished school now and now I'm going into Yr 8. These holidays I will not be able to come and visit St.Josephs because I have to do this art programme which covers half of my art GCSE's. I can't wait to go-it sounds so fun but the thing is that it means I won't be able to come and visit St.Joey's. I'm very sorry. I was really looking forward to seeing you and I'm so very sorry.I hope you don't mind but I promise to come and visit when the school year starts.

Hello Everyone at Saint Joseph's Ordsall

I am back from Uganda, the Missionaries of the Poor would like to thank you all for your generosity and the Rosary beads that you bought for the children in their care.

Also you donated some money to the oven which is baking bread for over 500 children and that gives them at least one meal every day.

We have now started a bee keeping project, in Mutendwe, where the Brothers live, and are giving technical advice to the Brothers in how to keep bees. There will be over 30 hives and the bees that live in these hives will give us honey, which is then given to the Poorest of the Poor.

We must pray that this project is a success and also, continue to remember all the children in Uganda in our prayers.

God Bless you in all you works
Kind Regards
Mr Collins

I went to your school in the 50/60s and would like to know if we can add class photos !! I was looking for photos from this time hoping to find some photos of my dad george Allan as well as the rest of my family. What about the teachers? Like Miss Rabbitt &.sister Rose !! Many thanks for your time!! Good luck with your site!! It's Brilliant!!

We would love to add more photos - we have very many from Mount Carmel, as the school kept so many over the years, but fewer from St.Joseph's and very few from the 1940s or earlier. (Some more photos from the seventies and eighties have been added this holiday.) If you contact us using the 'Ask Us' page (left) our web manager will be glad to help you contribute your pictures.

Just to say how my wife and I were hugely impressed by your pupils' work on display in Sainsbury's, Salford.

The quality of the writing is truly excellent - imaginative, clearly expressed and (a particular obsession with my wife and I) with all the all the bits and bobs of punctuation nicely in place!

We hear so much about 'dumbing down'; work like this goes to prove the very opposite. We look forward to seeing more next year. In the meantime, all of you, staff and pupils alike, keep up the good work!

Wil and Jac Coleman
*************
Thank you for taking the time to post your kind message about the children's stories - we have all been surprised and delighted by the response of Sainsbury's shoppers to the display. The 'authors' are very proud to have had a real audience and to find that people have really read and enjoyed their hard work. Happy New Year from all of us!

What a surprise on seeing your site great memories. I went to Joey's from 63 to 69\70. My teachers in juniors were Miss Connolly, Mr Martin, Mrs Magrath Mr Mullholland., foot ball manager Mr Fox. Assembly in the hall singing Dear St Joseph Hear Our Prayer- written by Mr Magrath - singing 'soldier, soldier' acting out the parts. I would loke to hear from old class mates Les Hall, Peter Moran, Paul Smith, Charlie Roberts, Andy Knox , Sheila Johnson - whose mum was a dinner lady- Jacquline Ball, Julie Burns, Karen Delhunty, Susan Frimstone, Linda O'Brien, Mary Morley, Maria Welsby to name a few! I went to St.Peter's Grammar, Prestwich after Joey's and I now live in Liverpool -good to hear Father Dolan is still a Utd fan. Remember him late on Sat evenings for confession having been to the match. Keep up the good work- hope to hear from someone soon xxx

Hope you like this story I made - please reply if you do!

The legend of Shinjuku Dragon tail.
Once there was a boy who was normal like all other people who wanted to find his destiny. The boy sought his destiny on a tall mountain high above the clouds in the middle of the shinjuku village. When he reached the top, he looked below seeing a deep hill descending, by now he was past the clouds. At the top he saw a blue dragon who told him his destiny and that he was to become... Shinjuku Dragon Tail- the legendary guardian of the 4 elemental powers. He then mastered the powers and used them to defeat evil. The villagers were grateful for what he had done for them, and from that day on he became the legendary Shinjuku Dragon tail!!

Hope you liked it!

Hello everyone at St Joseph's, especially Mrs Hayes, Miss Prince and all Year 1. I came back to Antalya which is on the south coast of Turkey with my Mummy and little sister Selina. I really missed my Daddy and was so happy to see him. So we are all together again, I am glad. I have started back at my school and told all my friends and teachers about ''my fantastic school in Manchester''. They all said I had come back with a funny accent. I miss you all very much, thankyou Miss Ambrose for having me in your school. When I come to England again I will come and visit you. Thankyou for putting a picture of me and the Easter bunny on your web site I was so excited when I saw it. My Grandad is still very poorly so please remember him in your prayers. I can remember prayers and songs that I learned at school especially ''St Joseph was a carpenter'' this is my favourite. Bye, bye .

I stumbled across this site by accident and am delighted I did. My parents were married by Father Yarnitky during the war and I was one of four siblings who all attended St Joeys during the fifties. We were by birth order:Tony, David,Barry and Jean Turner. I have fond memories of the school. We brothers were nicknamed the " corduroy boys" as we were all kitted in the same corduroy trousers and jackets. We lived in the prefabs in what was then Goodiers lane.Does anybody remember us?

I went to Mount Carmel up until it closed and was at St Joseph's for a few months before moving home out of the area. Mount Carmel was a great school with excellent teachers such as Mrs McDermott and Miss Ambrose and I have very fond memories of my time there. I was searching the web for anything to do with Mount Carmel and was disappointed not to find much until I looked at the St Joseph's website. It was great to see the school is doing so well. I particularly enjoyed the archive photos and surprised to see myself in quite a few, especially the class communion photo with so many past friends, and evidence that I was actually an altar boy! I can actually still remember most of the school song it would be good if you could add the lyrics on the website some time. Great website and again well done to the school for some great progress.
********************
How lovely to hear from you, Philip - I have very fond memories of you and all the classes at little Mount Carmel on Croft Street.
Look in Resources on the left hand menu bar of the web site - the words to the hymn are in the Teachers' section under Religious Education resources.
Very Best Wishes, Miss Ambrose.

Hi everyone, I just thought I would see how the website was doing and it looks fantastic. I can't believe that there are still pictures of me on here e.g on the The Queen Opens the Lowry Centre and Learn Not To Burn pages. I have left school now and am currently looking for a job, plus I have my apprenticeship in car mechanics starting in September which I am looking forward to. Well that's all I have to say. I will come and see how the school is doing some day this week

Hello All at St Josephs

Just a little note from an old pupil to say what a great website you have.

Hope Year Six get good grades this year in Preparation for All Hallows.

As for me, am currently undergoing a spot of enforced recouperating at home so this allows me to get on with my own web pages, which is all about my volunteering.

You can find my pages at HTTP://www.piczo.com/colonelK

Hope you like it and will see you all soon.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas

I have a bit of a problem that maybe one or two people could help me with. I got married to my wife Val on Saturday 25th July 1970 at St Joseph's church. The priest was Father Tom Devaney. We were fortunate to be the first couple he married at St Joseph's after he came to replace Father Dolan. In later years he baptised my first two children. We lost touch when we moved to Warrington in the late 70s and I would be grateful if anybody knows his whereabouts or maybe a contact number.
Keep up the good work Mr Keane and all concerned.

Congratulations to the web master, the Principal , staff and students at St. Joseph's, for an outstanding and informative web site. The number of photos and information has increased tremendously, since I was last on your web site, and so has the excellence and performance of the school. My sister ( Eileen Clarke, Calgary Alberta, Canada), and I ( Kitchener, Ontario, Canada) attended St. Josephs, in the middle and late 1940's, and our parents ( George and Charlotte Clarke) attended there also. In fact that's where they met. My sister and I have both signed this guestbook before, and look forward to spending more time looking around at the many outstanding stories and photos. I just spent two hours looking about the site, and I could easily spend another two.Congratulations and God Bless.

When I attended st Joseph's in the 50s and 60s our musical talent's were performed on either a Tambourine, a Drum, or a Triangle. Now I see on your homepage photo the school orchestra no less and performing a Beatles song. Brilliant. May I say well done to all the staff and pupils concerned.

Tommy, last time I heard of Paddy Doyle he lived in Broughton, he married a friend of mine, Malita Heywood. I usually see her on Salford Precinct but I've not seen her for a while, I'll try to find out. I've spoken to Henry Jones and he is coming, and funnily enough my late husband was Walter Watling's cousin, he lives in Stretford. I'll see if I can find his number and give him a ring.

Thanks Pat, I spotted the mistakes the other day, and will try and get them rectified. You are right Pat. Paddy dislocated his thumb in the shoot in, and it was touch and go if he played or not,if not, then I would have ended up in goal, glad he played though. I wonder where Paddy is? I would love to meet up with him again, we were mates. I will phone Sandra for my ticket. Tommy . PS Save us a dance?

Tommy Mulgrew: I've just been looking at the photo you've added of the football team 1958. Was that the match that Paddy Doyle broke his little finger and carried on playing? By the way the two lads sitting on the front row are John Briffa and Peter Gaffey. I got a phone call off Sandra Duxbury on Sunday. She has some tickets for Joey's reunion, see you there. Pat Savage

I keep checking the page to see if any of the old classmates would drop a line, I recently spoke to Kevin Foran and brother Ged, well spoke was not the right word, it was more of laughter and memories, and people we would like to hear from, here's just a few, Hooky Walker, Charlie Craddock, Lol Rotin, Peter Dawson, Terry Fishwick. Tony Smyth, Peter Barratt, John Little, John Whittle, Johnny Pattern, and Peter Graham. Kev gave me lots more but I was so bust laughing I couldn't write them down. This year's reunion should be a bit special if we put our minds to it, so let's buy the tickets off Adge and make it a good time for living, and give a thought to the poor teachers who earned their money trying to get us educated. So come one, come all. Tommy

Dear Miss Ambrose, So pleased that the children have been told this story. There is a little more. Dad and I went from school. Got the 67 bus to Peel Green, got off at Stott Lane where my mam worked, doing a man's job for the war effort at B.P. repairing trucks. Me mam got a bigger shock than I did! So that's why it turned out to be a memorable day. Let us pray for the children that were not as fortunate as I was. God bless. Anthony. (Australia).

The soldier dad returning home after WW11( photo 60 yrs on) brought back a fond memory. I was in class about late 1945 when Mother Teresa came in and took my teacher Miss Knowles to one side. After a few words Mother Teresa left. Miss Knowles ask me to stand up- "Oh, what have I done wrong now?" I thought. Then the door opened and there with Mother Teresa stood my DAD after four long years or so. What a day that was. One of the biggest surprises of my life, even to this day.

What a wonderful real life story - the children have been really touched by the war stories we have heard about. I am so grateful to you for sharing it.

Gave this web site to my cousin Ken Phoenix in Adelaide, Australia, he spotted one of his friends on an old photo and was thrilled with the website. Wonder what happened to my old class mates Henry Jones Charlie Craddock Eric Feeney Walter Watling and Big Lol Rotin, love to hear from some of them. The corner cake shop we use to visit-my sister in law worked there, they are celebrating 53yrs of marriage-my big brother George. Hi, I live in Sydney Australia, I have just received an e-mail from another ex pupil, I left 1964, he left 1965. he told me there had been a reunion that Father Dolan had attended, he was one of our priests in the '60's at Buille Hill Park. Mr Wilson told me there was a thriving site for ex pupils of St Josephs and I have spent 2 days but cannot find it, I wondered if you could help?? I understand it is not your position to keep track of such things, but thought I would try.

Thank You for your time,

David McManus.

Thank you for your enquiry - here is the site - not exactly just for ex-pupils but you are very welcome. It's amazing how far and wide St.Joseph's (and Mount Carmel's) old boys and girls have travelled and settled - many a long, long way from this little corner of inner city Salford. See if you can find a youthful picture of yourself in 'Archives' !

Mr Keane, on Friday May 6th this year myself and a few friends organised a 50s&60 St Josephs school reunion at Buille Hill. May I take this opportunity to thank you for mentioning the event on your information page and also thank anybody who came along and enjoyed what turned out to be a cracking night. I have just found this website and I'm so thrilled. What memories I have of my time at St. Joseph's. I was there from around 1942 to 1952. I remember very well Mother Theresa, Miss Kelleher, and I was petrified of Mother Joan! To MARIE LILLEY, I remember Winifred Condron and the name Phillip Condron is very familiar. To SHEILA SAVAGE, I remember the name Patricia Savage. I think she was in my class. I am going to send a picture to the archives of our group on May Sunday. I'm not sure of the year, probably 1944 or 1945. I remember some of their names: Maureen Knight, Sheila Burns, Winifred Condron - Crown Bearer, Eileen Davis - Queen. I'm a trainbearer third from the right, next to Winifred. I would love to hear from anyone from that time. This is such a pleasure for me.

What a great website - My whole family went to St.Joseph's. My mother,Agnes(nee Tucker) was in that oldest archive photo from 1910. I and my siblings (7 of us) attended during 30s, 40s, and 50s and even later. I remember with much love - Miss Sheehee, Mother Theresa and Mother Joan. I was one of the evacuees from St.Jo's in 1939. So many memories!!!

30 October 2003 00:00:00
I think that number 1 is by far the most interesting picture on the page, because it was created by someone who is very visual and I think it would make a great wall mural symbolising the ever growing urban landscape in Salford.

29 October 2003 00:00:00
I though they were all so good, number 1 should be sent to Manchester City Council, it looked like a picture they could use for a poster, very arty city subtle colours and design,. Clarice would be proud of the 10 & 7 they would be straight on a pot. Number 1 has it by a whisker.

Some beautiful pictures in the gallery, really hard to choose my favourite. However, No. 2 "Sea Shades of Blue" just gets my vote, excellent choice of colours and brush technique. I can visualise whales!

I like number 3 best because its painted in bright colours of red and green and black.
Mrs Swindells

Spoilt for choice! All the pictures are very good, but my vote goes to No. 2, Sea Shades of Blue. It reminds me of whales!

I thought I would add a communion prayer in thanks....

We bring the bread, we bring the wine,
We offer them to you.
We bring our work, we bring our play
And everything we do.

Your love for us, our love for you
We celebrate today.
Oh fill our hearts with peace and joy.
Be with us Lord we pray.

I have just visited your site for the first time and have just relived some wonderful memories of my school days. I started school in 1959 and one of my first memories is having to have an afternoon sleep in a tiny canvas bed ! I think this must have been in the Reception class. My sister Pat (Patricia) who is four years older than me and my younger brother Peter also attended St. Josephs. It was a lovely school back then and I am sure it still has the same magic now as it did then.

Hi,

I'd just like to say what a very good website you have! I've just seen a picture from the archives of my brother in Mount Carmel (Stuart Davies - the one right on the end at the top left of the photograph) and I can't wait to see his face when he sees it!! Myself and all my brothers and sisters (Mark, Helen, Joanne and Stuart Davies) attended Mount Carmel/St Josephs, and we have good memories about our days there, and my own daughter is due to start her school life at St Josephs this September and I hope she enjoys it as much as we did.

PS. We'd like to see more photos from the late 70's/early 80's please.

I get so sentimental reading these memories. I was at Joey's between 1973 and 1978

and the smell of hot vimto takes me straight back to the playground!! The teachers were all lovely.
They really were the best years.

Hi, great site, well done everyone. I used to go to St. Joseph's way back in 1955 to 1963 left at 11 to go to St. Alberts (Sacred Heart wasn't built then) Found the site through friends reunited. My Brother Philip also went to Joey's (as it's affectionately known) as did my mum Mary whose maiden name was Condron. I used to live in Napier Street and my gran used to bring us warm penny hovis loaves freshly baked from Kershaw's the bakery that used to be on the corner of Tatton Street and Ellesmere Street. What wonderful memories.

As a previous Education Welfare Officer linked to St Josephs RC, Ordsall, I have only fond memories of the School, its staff and the children. The School was always a safe haven from the turmoil outside - entering the School you were always greeted with 'Hallo, how are you' followed by tea or coffee with biscuits. Intellectual, relevant conversation was always the order of the day with the Headteacher, Miss Ambrose. I always left the school feeling mentally revived. Thanks, MA and I wish the School well for the future.

I attended St Joseph's from 1962 - 1964 before going to Sacred Heart. I have one very vivid memory of Sister Rose literally flying down that long hallway which was up the stone steps and to the right - the one with classrooms along the left hand side. I think there was a walkway to the right joining two parts of the school??. I just stood back out of the way and pressed by back as hard as I could against the wall. No one ever got in Sister Rose's way!!!.

What a great Web-site. All my family went to Joey's (Tony, John, Michael, Myself Dermot, Mary and very briefly Peter). From Joey's I went onto Sacred Heart for three years before moving to Warrington. I have read through all the comments in the Guestbook and they brought back some great memories, especially being on the telly on 'WE WANT TO SING' with Anita Harris and Bernard Cribbins. My Mam sent me out wearing a flowery shirt and matching tie, no photo's please.
Other memories include playing for the School football teams and getting your tokens on friday afternoons so you could get the bus to Littleton road next morning, does that still happen? Another strong memory of mine was being an Altar Boy and serving at Funerals on school mornings, you managed to get out of school and also got a few bob tip. Keep up the good work.

First visit to your web-site and glad to know St. Joey's is thriving! I attended infants and juniors from 1960-/67and my surname was Sivori. My memories are mainly of the Juniors, although Mother Amabalis was my infant Head. I recall most vividly catachism by rote in Mrs Evason's class (?Junior 1), Father Yarnitsky ( particularly his funeral cortege!!)and Father Dolan, Mr and Mrs McGrath, Mr and Mrs Mulholland, and performing 'O, Soldier, Soldier, wont you marry me?' in the school hall. I also remember struggling home to Cross Lane with a huge framed painting of the Sacred Heart purchased at a school sale. In fact, I think my mother still has the latter! I am still in contact with a friend in Australia that I first met at St. Joseph's - so I'll send her your link!

Enjoyed the site very much. I attended St Josephs 1970-1975. Teachers I remember are Mr and Mrs Mullholland and son Jimmy, Miss Watson, Mr Hadfield, Mr Dixon and Headmaster Mr Reynolds. Many happy memories, playing netball and rounders, still see many of my classmates. We moved to Mount Carmel for a while when the school was modernised. Would love to come back to have a look round. Please let us have more photos and memories.

A great site. It was wonderful to see the old photographs. I started my teaching career at the school in 1976. The head was Mr Reynolds. The class I had was Junior 3. During the Queen's silver jubilee we put on a re-enactment of the Coronation. Some of the children I remember are Christopher Gaffey and his sister Angela, the Molloy twins, Peter Hiley, Darcy? Mary Huddlestone. Staff members included: Mr Mullholland, Sister Catherine, Miss Svolkinus, Mrs Parden, Mrs Stewart. I enjoyed my time at St Joseph's and wish all the children well. Best wishes, Anne Noone (Nee Williams.)

28 April 2002 00:00:00
Does any one remember Pat savage ,and sisters Sheila ,Margaret, and brother John between 1940 to 1959. Does any one remember Miss Donnolly, Mother Rose, Mrs Doyle and Miss Rabbit . After leaving ST Joseph's, Miss Rabbit went on to be a teacher at the Sacret Heart, her pupils there thought I was her sister, but had to admit I WAS MUCH BETTER LOOKING (hope you see this Moira) . Does anyone remember Sister Elizabeth, if we were hanging about on the corridor we could hear her coming because her rosary beads would hit her legs and jingle so we would all run before she caught us. Mother Joan was a different kettle of fish as she would pick hers up and, 99% of the time, she would catch us. You would then spend almost an hour outside her office waiting for her to call you in while she tried out the different thicknesses and lengths of the cane (probably to see which one hurt the most.) By the time she had finished you were a nervous wreck . Would love to hear from anyone from this era with lots of memories .

Well what can I say?
This is one of the most informative school websites that I have seen. The teachers and pupils should both be proud of such a fine school. I read with interest about your school and the archived pictures were wonderful. Keep up the fantastic work, all of you, you'll no-doubt be reaping the rewards for many years to come.

Just before Christmas some of the children came to sing carols to us while we had our Christmas lunch. To say that they made our day would be an understatement. It wasn't just the perfect carol singing or the trouble they had taken in dressing up for the occasion which bowled us over but also their lovely natures. They were so well behaved and polite that everyone commented on their behaviour. They are a great credit to the school and to themselves.

Hi, I was just looking at the website, and I think it is great. I have never seen a website so astonishing in my life. If someone from a different country saw this they would be blinded-metaphorically speaking. By the way, this school is the best one I've ever been to.

I've been meaning to find this site for ages, and here I am at work and we found it, and my colleagues are having a look and wish they were back at school, instead of here at work (very boring). My daughters love the school, and all the teachers, and helpers, and the out of school activities, and just about everything. The archive photos are lovely, and so is the art work, and the newletters etc. Well done, a really good site, layout and design, see you all soon.
